NUTRITION SURVEY OF RURAL CHILDREN, IN RELATION TO SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAMS

Abstract
A nutrition survey of 259 children 6 to 13 years old, in the Sangpoom elementary school at Kumsa-myun, Yoju-gun, Kyonggi-do, was undertaken in July¢¥ of 1986, to investigate dietary and nutritional status. Mean value of height was 96.1¢¥% of Korean standard by the Korea Standards Research Institute. However,. in terms of 26.2% of the subjects were proven to be short. Mean value of weight was 88.8o of Korean standard. However, in terms of 0.49% of the subjects, were proven to be severe underweight. By the WHO criterion, 5.4% of the subjects were scored to be anemic. Mean rinary urea nitrogen jcreatinine ratio was 6.7, the higher the grade of children, the lower ratio was shown.
Carbohydrates provided 67% of total energy intake; protein accounted for 13¡Æ?10; fat provided 20%. Energy intake was divided among breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks in a percentage ratio of 21 :42: 22 : 15. The lunch, which was served at the elementary school, provided 42% of daily energy and nutrient intake, in general.
The survey clarified that the elementary school feeding largely supplemented the inadequate dietary intakes of these children at home. The survey also described that almost equal amount of school lunch was served to each child of all grades by children on duty. Thus, the higher the grade, the lower ratio of dietary intake was observed. The survey indicates that special concerns of child care of mothers and teachers are strongest regarding improving the nutritional status and behaviors of children.
